Out & About: Discover Riverside
Ever wanted to peek inside Riverside’s historic Fox Theater? The recently renovated Municipal Auditorium? The red sandstone Universalist Church? Or maybe the former Rouse Department Store (now UCR/Culver Center of the Arts)? This Saturday (10/13), you will get your chance during a day-long event — “Discover Riverside” — presented by the AIAIC (American Institute of Architects – Inland California chapter).
The event, which runs from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., will offer information and docent tours of several of downtown Riverside’s historic and refurbished buildings, including: Riverside Municipal Auditorium, Riverside Art Museum, UCR/Culver Center of the Arts, UCR/California Museum of Photography, Fox Theater, RCC/Center for Social Justice & Civil Liberties and Universalist-Unitarian Church. And not to be missed are the regular guided tours of the Mission Inn given by docents of the Mission Inn Museum.
A special “behind-the-scenes” lecture with Fox Theater restoration architect Richard McCann, FAIA will be held at 1 p.m. The special lecture is free but reservations are required. Also on hand on the downtown pedestrian mall will be various vendors and community groups, including Old Riverside Foundation and Riverside Historical Society.
So grab your camera, bring your family and explore downtown Riverside’s rich architectural heritage!
Update: A tidbit we learned about the Fox Performing Arts Center from tour guide (and restoration architect) Richard McCann, FAIA: The Riverside Fox has the second largest usable stage in Southern California (behind Chandler Pavilion) and is equipped to easily accommodate virtually any show including those with large sets and intricate lighting/sound such as The Lion King.
